The tournament calender has been updated for 2017 and Iconz are now looking for support from our local community. In the coming weeks we will be holding a player information session and contacting local businesses to assist with our programs.
After the success of the Iconz pre-season at SPS in 2015 we were once again given the responsibility of getting the junior school up to SPS rugby standards. It was great to see several boys and girls return from last years sessions and their involvement and development was excellent.
After 5 sessions all our players have developed our passing ‘pendulum technique’, draw and pass, tackling and rucking. With lots of brand new players joining the ranks the camaraderie and spirit was something to admire.
Now with all our players moving into teams comes the next stage of Iconz involvement at SPS. We will be providing our second ‘coach the coaches’ session in the coming weeks and will be giving guidance to all the junior and middle school SPS coaches to maintain and build the skill level of Rugby at SPS.
Good luck to all the players and looking forward to a safe, fun and winning season!
The Iconz boys have ascended on Kenya to take on Africa and the world. With sickness rocking the player group since arriving the prep for the tournament has not been ideal. But to the credit of the boys they came together as a group and decided to go hard and give it there all.
After a nervous start against Newcastle wailers nothing came off for the Iconz team. The wailers had all the possession and jumped out to a 19 point lead in the first half. The second half saw more opportunities for Iconz but the team couldn’t complete and the final score was 41-5 . The boys left the pitch knowing they had let an opportunity slide.
To the credit of the players they rallied and in the next game against Namibia national 7s they stormed to a 19-0 lead after just 3min. But that would be where the tide would turn with Namibia fighting back and with a late try Iconz sealed a 26-24 win.
Then came the final game of the day facing the core IRB side Portugal. The winner would go to the cup the loser to the bowl. Again Iconz raced to 21-0 and with a try on half time it was 21-5 at the half. This would be where it changed some silly decisions and utter fatigue kicking in Portugal took the lead 24-21 with the hooter going in the background. From here Portugal kicked the restart out on the full and worth done great vision Jonesy pulls back and through some great hands funds butcher who does an Iconz classic move bow with flash and down the sideline the iconz veteran goes to win the match and dive over the line.
The cattle dog mentality is kicking into the group and we look forward to taking on the curry cup side Western Province from South Africa at 1150am kenya time. 650pm est (Brisbane).
Iconz Rugby is looking forward to the upcoming 2015 7s season. We are excited to take a different approach this year to 7s with a huge focus on individual development and investment into creating rugby leaders.
Iconz will have players split over many club sides this season with the introduction of a Brothers, Bond and UQ rugby sevens programs. This has created a great opportunity for some of our Qcup Rugby League players like Ben Cronin (Wynnum), Dallas Anderson (souths Logan) as well as the Borrell brothers Chris and Leigh who for the last 10wks have been doing a specific Iconz Rugby 7s training program to get ready for the season.
This year we are looking forward to returning to Noosa International 7s where our goal is to lift the Stan Bisset Cup for the 2nd time. Winning this tournament would create great momentum and put Iconz in a very strong position to return to NZ and compete for the Auckland 7s title.
With the introduction of a new coaching structure and training philosophy Iconz are very excited to rip into training next week and showcase the Iconz style that took many of our players onto professional contracts and overseas opportunities.
Iconz will be holding our June/July school holiday Rugby clinics on the 7th and 8th of July at Sunnybank Rugby Club and St Pauls School.
